Gary Card “Ugly Boys” Sculpture Series

Introducing “Ugly Boys” – a sculpture series conceived by celebrated multidisciplinary creative Gary Card. The new series of 20 ceramic works will be available to view and purchase exclusively at Dover Street Market from Thursday 16th October as part of Frieze 2025.

Based on the concept of bobbing head toys, the collection of stoneware figurines are an expression of Card’s idiosyncratic approach to his work, as well as his experience exploring Jingdezhen’s unique network of materials, methods and local residents during his International Artist in Residence program at JCUIS. Making use of Yangzhou clay, finished with gunmetal metallic glaze, the sculptures depict fantasy western characters such as cowboys, jesters and snowmen; adorned with seemingly random objects that Card refers to as “barnacles” – pushing the figures into the realm of abstraction.
