35 Years of Ministry of Sound
As part of Dover Street Market’s Frieze Week programme, Ministry of Sound continues to celebrate its 35th anniversary with the launch of its new book Ministry of Sound (Anthology) and a series of limited-edition collaborations bringing together the club’s history, design, fashion and music.
At the centre of the activation is a new edition of the iconic Ministry of Sound bomber jacket, created with Alpha Industries and Chemical X, designer of the original Ministry of Sound logo. Exclusive to Dover Street Market and limited to just 35 pieces, each jacket is hand-numbered and signed, giving its owner a unique piece of Ministry of Sound history. The collaboration revisits an item synonymous with Ministry’s earliest years, produced by the same brand behind the original jackets in 1991.
The activation also marks the launch of the much-anticipated book “Ministry of Sound (Anthology)”, by author and creative director Simon Moore and published by Rizzoli New York. It documents the people, culture and creativity behind the club’s first 35 years. Told through first-hand stories from founders, DJs, dancers, designers and staff, alongside previously unpublished photography and an extensive archive of flyers, records, tickets and ephemera, the book brings together the story of Ministry from its underground beginnings in a disused south London warehouse to its place at the heart of global dance music culture.
Moore has also designed a limited series of T-shirts drawing on ephemera from Ministry’s history. These include graphics from a pre-opening business card featuring the club’s working title name, a mid-90s Japan tour flyer and the manual for the original Urei mixer installed when Ministry first opened, all taken from the personal collections of founder Justin Berkmann and former resident DJ CJ Mackintosh.
Together, the collection brings 35 years of Ministry of Sound into Dover Street Market through archive, design and some of the objects that have defined its visual history.
