The collection presents classic house motifs infused with a pop sensibility and American archetypes, a slouching, easeful everyday feeling with precision of tailoring and mastery of fabric from the atelier. Kim Jones and Eli Russell Linnetz draw parallels between Venice and Paris, combining their vision with that of the predecessors who have been Artistic Directors of men’s and womenswear at Christian Dior.
“We have worked with lots of different people on our collections, but this time I wanted to work with someone in a different way; I wanted somebody to see Dior from a different angle. With Eli Russell Linnetz, not only do I like his work but working with a younger designer on Dior Men and seeing things from his perspective felt incredibly inspiring. It was both familiar and revelatory; reaffirming why we both dreamed about working in fashion in the first place” — Kim Jones
Ahead of the launch, long-time collaborator, and friend Eli Russell Linnetz talks to Dover Street Market.
How do you feel about the launch of the Spring 23 capsule collection in London on January 5th?
Eli Russell Linnetz: I am super excited for this launch and to be with Kim in his hometown in London. This is going to be the first time that this capsule is available worldwide. So it’s really exciting!
What is your experience with Dover Street Market in London?
ERL: As my partners in ERL, Adrian Joffe and Rei Kawakubo were the ones that helped me create ERL and from the very beginning, they have been so supportive of what I do – so for me, Dover Street Market has always been a home for ERL which is why it’s so exciting for the collaboration with Dior to be available there. It brings it back full circle.
What are your favorite pieces from this capsule collection?
ERL: Definitely the shoes are some of my favorite pieces. They really represent my hometown, Venice Beach and represent the things that my friends and I love and wear every day. Also, the whole project began with the knitwear and the sweaters, so the “California Couture” piece really embodies the whole spirit of the project.
What was the creative process behind this capsule collection?
ERL: The process was very organic and authentic. Kim has such a deep understanding of the artistic process and how to let things live and grow – while maintaining the codes of the house. Kim also has an amazing team of people he works with – sometimes we would create in silence – there were no words needed for what we were creating. The work was never forced, and we never questioned each other – it was pure joy and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have worked with him.
What does it feel to you to have presented this capsule collection in your hometown in Los Angeles and now to see the launch worldwide of those pieces?
ERL: It’s super exciting and I was very lucky to be at the show most recent show in Egypt. I didn’t realise how many people would be wearing Dior x ERL at the show so that was really great to see it all come to life internationally.
